Water Main (Hydrant) Flushing

The Village of Suffern Water Department will be conducting water main (hydrant) flushing within the Village. This process enhances water quality by removing sediments from inside the pipeline flushing them out through the hydrant; identifies malfunctions of the hydrant and related valves; helps determine weaknesses in the water distribution system; identifies inadequate water volumes and pressures in the mainlines and helps determine locations where flow pressures may require valve inspections.

To minimize the disruptions of residents flushing will take place overnight beginning September 1, 2020 thru approximately September 25, 2020.

TEMPORARY DISCOLORATION OF WATER MAY OCCUR.

During flushing sediment that accumulates in the water main becomes disturbed and temporarily suspended in the water causing discolored water. This disturbance usually lasts for approximately two to four hours after which time the sediment will settle out. Open cold faucets to let water clear before using it. Discolored water is not harmful; however, the discolored water can stain clothing, so it is best to wait for the water to clear before doing any laundry.

Additional notices will follow each week with Village street locations to indicate where flushing will take place that week.
